Dr Michael Watt, the consultant behind the significant recall of patients by the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, has been temporarily suspended from practice following a hearing by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service.
In May 2018, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust indicated that it would be recalling around 2500 NHS patients following concerns raised about Dr Watt in a report by the Royal College of Physicians. In addition, over 110 private patients were to be recalled.
At the end of November, it was announced that an additional 1044 former patients of Dr Watt would also be recalled.
An independent inquiry chaired by Brett Lockhart QC has been established to review the recall of neurology patients by the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. Specifically, the inquiry is investigating the circumstances which led to the patient recall and to assess the corporate governance procedures and arrangements within Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.
