NHS report recommends obstetric improvements

The NHS Resolution’s Annual report has recommended that research is required into the best way to monitor the heart rates of unborn babies.

The report followed a review of cases of babies born with a potentially severe brain injury following labour at term, which had been reported to the NHS body under a new Early Notification Scheme. The scheme is part of a government initiative to halve the rates of stillbirths, neonatal and maternal deaths and brain injuries linked with birth by 2025. It has been up and running in England since April 2017.

Why are there problems with checking fetal heart rates during labour?

The report found problems with checking fetal heart rates during labour was a factor in 70% of cases and delays in delivery in 60%. The delays included:

• Delay in transferring to labour ward
• Delay in the admission to theatre
• Delay in administering pain relief
• Delay concerning vaginal breech births.

How the NHS can better monitor the heart rates of unborn babies

Amongst the recommendations from the report were:

• Urgent research to develop a standardised approach to monitoring fetal heart rates
• Improved detection of hyponatremia in women in labour
• Increased awareness of the importance of resuscitation and immediate neonatal care for newborns.
