26th September marks National Mesothelioma Awareness Day. Here at Thompsons NI, we’re supporting the need to raise awareness and funding for victims who are suffering with mesothelioma.
Below, we’ve outlined what mesothelioma is and how we are supporting current victims of this fatal disease on Mesothelioma Awareness Day, and every day.
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which is caused by exposure to asbestos. It covers the outer surface of some of the body’s organs, however, it mainly affects the lining of the lungs. Symptoms include respiratory complications, shortness of breath, fatigue and muscle weakness, and it can take up to 40 years for these symptoms to develop. Unfortunately, there is no cure for mesothelioma and the life expectancy of someone with mesothelioma is reduced after diagnosis.
Asbestos was widely used as an insulation in the construction industry before regulations banning its use came into force in 1999. Construction workers, plumbers, shipbuilders, and manufacturers are just some of the professions who are at risk of asbestos exposure, however, it’s not limited to these professions.
We have supported office workers, public servants and teachers diagnosed with mesothelioma as a result of being exposed to asbestos in the buildings, schools and hospitals where they worked. We have also supported loved ones who have been exposed to asbestos brought home on family members’ contaminated clothing or overalls and are now suffering with mesothelioma.
Our specialist solicitors at Thompsons NI have decades of experience of establishing successful legal cases against employers and insurance companies liable for the consequences of asbestos exposure.
We recently secured a significant settlement on behalf of the widow of a gentleman who sadly passed away as a result of mesothelioma. Commenting on the support we provided, our client said: “The service provided by Thompsons NI was excellent. They reassured me and took away a lot of the stress and anxiety I had about the legal process. The outcome was way beyond my expectations and I am so thankful for all that Thompsons NI have done.”
