Thompsons NI Supports Road Safety Week 2019

Thompsons Northern Ireland are proud to support Road Safety Week, which takes place between the 18th-24th November 2019. Our charity partner, Brake, are working with schools, community groups and road safety professionals to educate everyone on the important of road safety.

What to do if you have a Road Traffic Accident?

In the unfortunate event that you or a family member are involved in a road traffic accident, it is important to know what to do:

  • Call Emergency Services
  • Share details with the other driver
  • Take photographs of the damage to both cars
  • Ask for the details of anyone who may have witnessed the accident
  • Report the incident to the police and ask for a reference number
  • Inform your insurance company about the accident
  • Contact Thompsons NI

How do I claim for a Road Traffic Accident?

It is important to understand that you are entitled to see a solicitor of your choice and you do not have to go with the solicitor appointed by your insurance company.

If you were a passenger in a vehicle that was involved in a road traffic accident, even if the vehicle was driven by a family member or friend, you are able to make a claim against the insurance company of your family member or friend as you were injured through no fault of your own.

The personal injury team at Thompsons NI in Belfast are experts in dealing with road traffic accidents. You should arrange to consult with us immediately. If you are not local or cannot make it into our office, a member from our team can arrange to have a telephone consultation with you at a time most convenient to you.

How much compensation will I receive?

After taking instructions from you, a member of our expert team will carefully draft a letter of claim to both the driver at fault and his/her insurance company. The insurance company will then investigate the incident and make a decision on liability. Under the pre-action protocol, the insurance company has three months to investigate the incident. However, the majority of road traffic investigations are completed within weeks as liability is normally clear-cut.

Compensation for every claim is different due to the diverse injuries that occur as a result of a road traffic accident. It is difficult to accurately assess quantum without having received an appropriate medical-legal report from a medical expert. This is why we endeavour to get you examined by an expert as soon as possible. Upon receipt of this report, we will be able to accurately assess quantum and ensure that you receive the maximum compensation available in the shortest time possible.

Are there time limits for Road Traffic Accident claims?

You must claim for a road traffic accident within three years of the date of accident or within three years from the date that you discover that your injury was linked to the road traffic accident - whichever date is later.

We would advise that you contact us immediately and let us handle your case from the beginning to ensure an efficient and successful outcome.
